Obituary for Harold Joseph "The Possum" Leger

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021, at 11:00 A.M. at Assumption Catholic Church in Mire for Harold Joseph Leger, 75, who passed away at his daughter’s home in Rayne on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 4:40 P.M.
Fr. Brent Smith, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne will be officiating for the services. Burial will be held in Assumption Catholic Church in Mire.
The family has requested the visitation to be held on Friday, January 22, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. until 10 P.M. in the Duhon Funeral Home Chapel in Rayne. A Rosary will be recited on Friday at 6:30 in the evening in the Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will resume on Saturday, at 8:00 A.M. until time of services.
Survivors include three daughters, Michelle Martin of Breaux Bridge, Connie and husband, Ryan Henry of Rayne, Mona Leger of Rayne; one son, Bryan Leger and companion, Tammy Romero of Rayne; three sisters, Barbara Meaux of Rayne, Brenda and husband Anthony McGuirk of Crowley, Linda and husband, Chad Thibodeaux of Rayne; one brother, Norris “Beaver” and wife, Pam Leger of Rayne; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Leger was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Hollier Leger; his parents, Percy and Hazel Romero Leger; one brother, Carroll “Blanc” Leger; one niece and God Child, Tammy Leger Jay.
Mr. Harold loved Cajun music; he started playing Cajun Music around 16 years old. He played accordion, drums, bass and steel guitar. He played with Bobby Leger, Aldus Roger, Warren Storm, Ronnie Matthews, Belton Richard, Rufus Thibodeaux, Rodney Miller, Tony Thibodeaux, R.C. Vanicor, Jean Savoie, Bernard Thibodeaux, and Wayne Toups. His passion for Cajun music helped support his family along with working in the oilfield, construction and owning several businesses. His love for George Jones led him to have the nick name “Possum” and opening the Possum Hollow Lounge and Possum Hollow Restaurant. He was the Frog King in Rayne in 1975.
Pallbearers for the services will be grandsons, Collin Thibodeaux and Zay’lan Henry, brother-in-law, Anthony McGuirk, nephew, Chad Leger, friend, Charles Arabie and grand-daughter, Shea Arceneaux.
